Question: We encounter a lot of storms this time of year. How can I feel safe in case our home is affected?

Jim: My best advice: be prepared! Here are some helpful hints to get you and your home ready for unpredictable weather.

  • Create an emergency kit that includes everything from a battery-powered radio and flashlights to batteries and candles. Store the kit in a convenient location so you can find it fast.
  • If you want timely information about the storm, buy a weather-alert radio. You also can subscribe to the weather alert program at www.weather.com.
  • Take pictures and video of your home and all its contents. Store the information at an off-site, secure location such as a bank lock box.
  • Maintain current and accurate inventory lists of all your home’s contents such as brand name, model name, location of purchases and costs. Keep this information in a bank lock box or other safe place.

Make sure you understand your homeowner’s insurance policy and what is covered. You should have an adequate amount of coverage in case you experience a loss from the storm. Don’t overlook the little things, such as detailing your home’s contents, because mistakes can cost you a lot of money.

The most important thing to remember: be safe. All material items in your home are replaceable…you and your family are not. Listen to weather warnings should you need to take cover or evacuate your home.

Question: Our house was hit by a huge winter ice storm. What do we do now?

Jim: First of all: don’t panic. The most important thing is you and yours are safe and unharmed. Dealing with the aftermath of any storm can be frustrating and time-consuming, but my staff and I are here to help. Call our office at (314) 849-5830 or, if no one is available, call Shelter Insurance’s 24-hour hot line at 1-800-SHELTER. Make sure you communicate all details regarding your situation so your claim can be handled quickly and accurately.

Take the necessary steps you need to protect your property from further damage (such as covering broken windows or open areas). Your claims adjuster will review your insurance policy and work with you to handle your specific situation. Keep all receipts for any expenses incurred.

Question: What is the hottest life insurance product on the market right now?

Jim: Our “20 Pay Whole Life Insurance Policy” is your best bet. You start paying for this policy when your kids are young so they can benefit from your planning when they get older. It’s an inexpensive life insurance planning tool for your children’s entire future and, in some cases, can supplement their retirement. Call me today to discuss the details.
